against my better judgment

What with 30th birthday gifts and my own wee mid-winter spending spree, I’m feeling a) flush with cool new stuff and b) resolved to keep my wallet in my bag and my focus in my closet, playing with and enjoying what I’ve already got. After all, who wants to be ravenous, buying willy-nilly? Or, worse still, more moved by the act of acquiring than the item being purchased? I don’t. But that’s just me.

All that said, of course I still have my eyes open! Here’s a list of things I’d run out and buy if there were no such thing as “enough”:

* Clog boots
First, I would run over to Refinery and order me up a pair of clog boots. Right now I’m really digging the medium heel ones, pictured below. Wouldn’t they be perfect thrown on with leggings and a fleece in Colorado? Wouldn’t they? These are by Sven (as they all are at Refinery):

* APC leopard pouch
Next, I’d be on to bird, where I’d snap up the APC leopard pouch. Why I haven’t bought it already is beyond me. Oh yeah, I just re-read the first paragraph. Now I remember.

* Nili Lotan dress
Back up on Court Street, you’d then find me at Diane T., admiring my shoulders in the Nili Lotan halter neck tie dress. It’s all the bow you need, while leaving the arms and shoulders bare, bare, bare.

* Scarf from AliKat NYC
For a final indulgence, I’d head to AliKat NYC. Have you ever been? This is a store I like to stop into regularly, as the sales girls are the sweetest, and the selection (apart from the Vince, Ella Moss, etc., etc.) can be unexpected. Especially when it comes to their scarves. The green woven one pictured below is AKA New York, but I’ve also loved ones by Vera (new, not vintage!).

are you man enough?

I always think it’s kind of suspect when I see a guy heading to work empty-handed. Don’t you have a wallet? How about a book or magazine? Where are your clothes for the gym? There’s really no getting around it: guys have to schlepp stuff around just as much as us ladies do.

Maybe men were conditioned against bag-carrying earlier on. I’m not talking about overzealous gender identity enforcement in the childhood home. Rather, men’s bags used to be a real problem. There were briefcases and LL Bean backpacks and that was about it. Happily, this is no longer the case: these days, there are plenty of man-purses and man-totes around, thanks to the likes of Jack Spade, Freitag, Bally, etc., etc.

And on a recent trip to Philly, I discovered yet another one. It’s new, as in new to me, and launched in Spring ‘07. It’s Philly-based brand TRKFLD:

How handsome is that, the Pelly bag? It’s not the only one. There’s the Benjamin, the Bob… reassuring names for the manliest man.

So empty your over-packed pockets, guy, sit down and check them out.
