“What would you like for Christmas?”
It’s a perennially loved yet hated query. Loved because it forecasts gifts to come—ah, the flush of unwrapping, snapping ribbons! But hated because it’s not so easy to give gentle guidance on what one wants. Please understand: “gentle guidance” does not entail a list detailing style numbers, sizes and colors—you might as well just buy it yourself and submit your receipts for reimbursement. The idea is to instead offer a number of broad categories so that the giver can express themselves, too, in what they choose.
(Note: none of the above applies to the hapless giver who just begs for exact information. Throw them a bone! And neither does it extend to the Mayle Baby Billie bag I’ve been coveting. In orange.)
*Purple
I can’t pinpoint exactly when I suddenly became open to the idea of wearing purple, but it was recent and overwhelming. These days, my eye seeks this most regal of hues like a heat-seeking missile. Happily, I found a grape-purple pashmina in my own closet (another victory against the temptation to purge everything I’m not wearing at the very moment, go me!). But what I’d give for a dreamy shrunken purple blazer, like this one:

To see whose head I chopped, go here.
A color like this deserves a presence in the shoe department, don’t you think? Check out these pumps by chie mihara. They’re a) totally gorgeous and b) “party-perfect purple” (I read that somewhere):

Available at soula in Brooklyn.
*Plaid
I’ve loved plaid forever and guess what? I still do! In France I nearly sprung for a plaid jumper by Isabel Marant. But plaid isn’t just for wearing; it’s for carrying—or rolling, rather—too:

The Burton Flight Deck in Infrared Plaid makes quite a statement, don’t you think? It’s (of course) available on Burton.com.
*Additional guidance ideas: jewel tone satins, opaque tights (in any color—a great stocking stuffer!), leather driving gloves…
Happy holidays!
