go wide!

Ah, the glory of fashion. After a sustained fixation on stovepipes, now I only have eyes for a wide-leg jean.

Be it a ’70s patch-pocket style or a smart trouser cut, wide leg jeans bring more to the party than fabric, if you ask me. After months of flats flats flats, I can finally haul out my heels. The added height masked by lengthier hems (I like mine so that only the toes of my shoes are visible) adds up to a longer, leaner– and somehow more sophisticated– me.

The GoldSign Deitrich jeans have got it right– fitted on the waist, roomy in the leg and LONG. (Of course they’re available on shopbop.com.)

Speaking of denim, did you see this article on Levi-Strauss in today’s NY Times? It calls the veteran denim company “a case study in missed opportunities.” Ouch!

what's black and faceted and sparkles all over?

“My latest discovery is black jewels in jet, onyx, and other somber-coloured stones such as black tourmaline…” says Loulou de la Falaise in Susan Tabak’s pointed (and embossed) Chic in Paris. Well I’ve had my eye on black stones, too, after being bewitched by a Japanese client’s black diamond ring.

I didn’t feel right about questioning my client, but I had no problem approaching the stranger whose dark sparkler leapt out across the bar at me at In Vino last month. Behold Swarovski’s Nirvana Jet ring:

It is arresting and mysterious and–I assure you–not at all gaudy, something I’ve [erroneously?] come to expect from Swarovski. For some reason I had thought that this baby also comes with a gold-plated inner band (now that would really be heaven) but no dice. That’s OK; unless I happen upon a yellow gold and black onyx ring like the one below, I’ll happily accept the Nirvana and call myself satisfied.
