net-a-porter.com: the lowdown

A friend of threadmettle just passed on the link to this New York Times article, Point, Click, and Strut, about the rise of Net-a-Porter.com. oh london!

Yes friends, I’m back from London. What a city! A week ago, I stood at the Liverpool St. rail station for about 45 minutes during the morning rush and simply surveyed the crowd–something I’ve wanted to do in NY for months but have never made the time for. Here’s a taste of what I saw:

Geometric patterned coats, often belted
These ladies know their outerwear, and their sleek silhouettes looked smart, smart, smart. Below’s a swatch of patterned fabric (from Tom K Nguyen) and a Charles-Chang belted coat to give you a sense of what I mean:

What else? KNITS.
Knit caps and scarves, especially in brilliant white, were everywhere, including on dame Kate Moss on the cover of the Nov. 24th issue of Hello!

Boots
And on their feet? Although flats are big, still quite a number of London ladies teetered by on heels, especially high-heeled boots like these (worn with stovepipe jeans tucked in or short pants, of course):

Haute hosiery
For the dressier set, haute hosiery was omnipresent. A pair of lovely patterned tights, were an essential accessory for the season’s tulip skirts or winter shorts. Here’s an example from www.tightsplease.co.uk:
